São Paulo’s History at Arena Corinthians

Since the inauguration of Arena Corinthians in 2014, Tricolor Paulista had never won against their rivals on their turf. There were 18 matches, with 7 draws and 11 victories for Corinthians.

The most painful defeat for São Paulo supporters was in the 2015 Brasileirão when Corinthians won 6-1, marking the biggest win in their encounters.

In his first derby and only his fourth game leading São Paulo, Thiago Carpini ended the streak, achieving what 11 other coaches couldn’t. Here is the list of those 11 names who coached Tricolor against Corinthians at Neo Química Arena:

  • Rogério Ceni (three games)
  • Muricy Ramalho (two games)
  • Edgardo Bauza (two games)
  • Diego Aguirre (two games)
  • Cuca (two games)
  • Dorival Júnior (two games)
  • Milton Cruz (one game)
  • Fernando Diniz (one game)
  • Vagner Mancini (one game)
  • Hernán Crespo (one game)

On the night the streak ended, São Paulo had four debutants in the derby at Itaquera: Ferreira, Luiz Gustavo, Nikão, and João Moreira, who came on in the second half. In total, São Paulo used 110 different players to secure their first victory against the rival at the stadium in Itaquera.

Corinthians 1-2 São Paulo

On Tuesday night, São Paulo imposed themselves and won against Corinthians at Neo Química Arena for the first time. Their last away victory in Majestoso happened in March 2014 at Pacaembu.

Unbeaten in the season, São Paulo is gearing up for the Supercopa against Palmeiras, while Corinthians suffered their third consecutive defeat, deepening their crisis.

The start of the game lacked major thrills, with tough tackles and heated discussions. Corinthians had more possession but was not effective, while São Paulo was more goal-oriented.

The first dangerous opportunity came at the 16th minute. After a corner kick, Arboleda deflected the ball, and Luciano shot wide from close range.

São Paulo opened the scoring at the 19th minute. Wellington Rato delivered a beautiful pass to Calleri, who entered the box, collided with Félix Torres, and scored past Cássio.

At the 24th minute, Rojas took a free-kick into the box, Yuri Alberto deflected it, and Romero found himself alone but headed weakly for Rafael’s easy save.

Again from Rojas’ set-piece, Corinthians created a great chance. At the 30th minute, the Paraguayan took a corner, Raniele rose unmarked in the small area but headed wide.

At the 35th minute, Lucas made a good play and passed to Luciano inside the box. The number 10 cut to his left but slipped, shot while lying down, and Cássio collected the ball.

At the 40th minute, Alisson committed a harsh foul on Raniele and received a yellow card. Subsequently, the referee was called by VAR, and the Corinthians’ fans were hopeful for Alisson’s possible expulsion. However, the reviewed incident was Caetano’s aggression on Luciano, resulting in the expulsion of the Corinthians’ defender.

In the second half, São Paulo extended their lead early at the 5th minute. With another assist, Wellington Rato took a corner, and Luiz Gustavo rose completely unmarked at the near post to score the second goal for Tricolor.

Corinthians responded with Yuri Alberto in the following play. The forward cut to the right, struck a powerful shot from outside the box, and the ball hit the crossbar.

At the 27th minute, São Paulo made a serious mistake in the build-up, Wesley dribbled past Wellington Rato and faced Rafael one-on-one, but the goalkeeper made the save.

Corinthians reduced the deficit at the 45th minute. After a free-kick into the box, the ball hit Raul Gustavo and fell to Arthur Souza, who took a first-time shot, scoring his first professional goal.

São Paulo once again won a Majestoso as visitors after almost 10 years, and they secured their first-ever victory at Arena Corinthians. Tricolor leads Group D with 10 points, while Corinthians is the second-placed team in Group C with only 3 points.
