The group stage of the 2025 Club World Cup continues with excitement, goals, and unexpected twists. European giants like PSG, Chelsea and Bayern have booked their spots in the Round of 16, but there were some high-profile eliminations too, such as Atlético Madrid and Boca Juniors.
The results
Seattle Sounders – PSG 0-2
Paris Saint-Germain defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-0 to finish top of Group B. Goals by Kvaratskhelia and Hakimi confirmed the French side’s technical superiority as they progress with a perfect record. Seattle finishes the tournament with three losses, never really in contention.
Atlético Madrid – Botafogo 1-0
Atlético Madrid beat Botafogo with a goal from Griezmann, but the win wasn’t enough. The Spanish side is eliminated on goal difference in one of the biggest shocks of the group stage.
Porto – Al Ahly 4-4
A spectacular 4-4 draw between Porto and Al Ahly. Both teams still had slim hopes of qualification, but the result knocked both out. Group A sees Palmeiras and Inter Miami advance.
Inter Miami – Palmeiras 2-2
Lionel Messi’s team shined in a 2-2 draw with Palmeiras. Both sides were happy with the result, which sends them both to the Round of 16. Inter Miami finishes with five points in Group A, level with the Brazilians.
Auckland City – Boca Juniors 1-1
Historic draw for Auckland City, who held Boca Juniors to a 1-1 and contributed to the shocking elimination of the Argentinians. For Boca, it’s a disaster: they exit the tournament without a single win. Auckland is also out, after a match delayed nearly an hour due to a violent thunderstorm near the Nashville stadium.
Benfica – Bayern Munich 1-0
Benfica stunned Bayern Munich with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal from Schjelderup. The Portuguese side tops Group C, while Bayern still progresses as runner-up thanks to earlier big wins.
Espérance – Chelsea 0-3
Chelsea had no trouble against Espérance de Tunis: a 3-0 win with goals from Adarabioyo, Delap, and Tyrique George. The Blues secure second place in Group D behind Flamengo and move on.
LAFC – Flamengo 1-1
Flamengo completed their group unbeaten with a 1-1 draw against Los Angeles FC. Late goals from Bouanga (84’) and Wallace Yan (86’) sealed the result. Flamengo tops Group D while LAFC exits the tournament.
Qualified teams for the Round of 16:
• Group A: Palmeiras, Inter Miami
• Group B: PSG, Botafogo
• Group C: Benfica, Bayern Munich
• Group D: Flamengo, Chelsea
Major eliminations:
Some of the most surprising exits include: Atlético Madrid (out despite 6 points), Boca Juniors (winless), Porto (caught in a tight group), Seattle Sounders (never competitive), LAFC (held back by draws and missed chances), and Espérance de Tunis (well below top-level competition).
The Round of 16 bracket is taking shape. PSG vs Inter Miami is the most anticipated clash, with Messi facing his former club. Chelsea will play Benfica, while Palmeiras and Botafogo meet in a high-quality Brazilian derby. Bayern Munich will face Flamengo.
