The new FIFA Club World Cup, in its 2025 edition with 32 teams hosted in the United States, has officially kicked off. The group stage is only a few days in, but strong signals have already emerged: some European powerhouses have stumbled out of the gate, while South American and African clubs are showing that the gap is narrowing.

This new format is a true mini-World Cup, with continental champions, a packed schedule, and plenty of intrigue. Here’s a full roundup of matches played so far, with results and highlights.

The latest matches

Palmeiras vs Al Ahly – 2–0
In the tournament opener in East Rutherford, Palmeiras got the better of Al Ahly in a hard-fought 2–0 win. After a long weather delay, the Brazilians broke the deadlock thanks to a fortuitous own goal by Abou Ali, then sealed the deal with a counterattack finished by José Manuel López. A solid and promising debut for the Brazilians.

Inter Miami vs Porto – 2–1
In a surprise result, Inter Miami came from behind to beat Porto. The Portuguese side had the early advantage, showing more rhythm and experience. But in the second half, Segovia equalized from a set piece, and then Messi delivered a masterful free-kick winner. A historic win for the MLS club, proving they’re not just here to make up the numbers.

Seattle Sounders vs Atlético Madrid – 1–3
Atlético Madrid showed their class against the Seattle Sounders, cruising to a 3–1 victory. Goals from Griezmann and Llorente put them in control, and Depay added a third. Seattle managed a late consolation goal, but the gap in quality was clear. A commanding start for the Spanish side.

PSG vs Botafogo – 0–1
One of the biggest shocks came in Pasadena, where Botafogo stunned PSG with a 1–0 win. The Parisians were slow and predictable, and were punished on the break by a clinical finish from Igor Jesus. Strong defensive discipline and tactical awareness gave the Brazilians a famous win, while PSG looked flat and uninspired. Trouble brewing for Luis Enrique.

Benfica vs Auckland City – 6–0
There was no contest in Orlando as Benfica demolished Auckland City 6–0. Di María scored twice, Barreiro added two more, and Pavlidis and Renato Sanches completed the rout. A statement performance from the Portuguese side, full of flair and dominance.

Flamengo vs Chelsea – 3–1
In one of the most anticipated clashes in Philadelphia, Flamengo defeated a disorganized Chelsea 3–1. The Blues took the lead through Jackson, but Flamengo responded with confidence and power: Bruno Henrique, Danilo, and Wallace Yan turned the game around. Chelsea finished the match with ten men. A win that boosts Flamengo’s status as contenders.

LAFC vs Espérance de Tunis – 0–1
LAFC suffered a disappointing home defeat to Espérance de Tunis. The Tunisian side stayed compact, took their one clear chance, and defended the lead expertly. Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane’s goal proved decisive in a tactically perfect performance. LAFC pushed hard but lacked clinical finishing.

Bayern Munich vs Boca Juniors – 2–1
In Miami Gardens, Bayern Munich overcame Boca Juniors 2–1 in a thrilling encounter. Kane opened early, Merentiel equalized for Boca, but Michael Olise delivered the winner with a stunning long-range strike. A high-level, balanced match that kept fans on edge.

Standouts and letdowns

Several trends are already emerging from these first fixtures. Flamengo, Benfica, and Bayern Munich look the most complete: they score freely, defend well, and have a clear game plan.

Botafogo and Espérance are early surprises, with confident wins against PSG and LAFC respectively.

On the flip side, Chelsea and PSG seem lost and underwhelming, Porto let a win slip away against Inter Miami, and Auckland City appears outmatched at this level.

Awaiting the next clashes

The group stage continues in the coming days with decisive matches. Many big clubs need to bounce back, others will aim to build on their strong start. The 2025 Club World Cup is turning out to be more balanced than expected — intense games, high energy, and plenty of stories still to be told.
