Champions as a stage

The Champions League is the stage for the greatest goalscorers in history. Scoring here means stepping into a special dimension. Yesterday, September 18, 2025, Erling Haaland wrote a new chapter among the scorers: 50 goals in 49 matches. A record that sparks debate about the ranking of top scorers in Europe’s most prestigious competition. One of Manchester City’s two goals against Conte’s Napoli was his.

Haaland and the speed record that changes history

Against Napoli, the Manchester City striker netted his 50th goal in the Champions League. No scorer had ever reached this milestone so quickly: Ruud van Nistelrooy needed 62 matches. This progression already makes him a unique case, even if he still remains far from the very top of the all-time list. The question now is whether the Norwegian can climb to the summit, where legendary names reign.

The giants who dominated the Champions League

At the top of the Champions League scorers’ ranking stands Cristiano Ronaldo with 140  goals: a record built across Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, which made him the symbol of the competition. Just behind him is Lionel Messi with 129, author of unforgettable nights with Barcelona and later with PSG.

The podium of scorers is completed by Robert Lewandowski, who reached 105 goals thanks to his journey with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Further back, but still in the top five, are Karim Benzema with 90 goals, the architect of Real Madrid’s triumphs, and Raúl González with 71, an icon of the Champions League before the record-breaking era, alongside van Nistelrooy with 60 goals.ù

A legacy hard to surpass

These numbers reflect not only the individual talent of the scorers, but also the longevity required to dominate the competition. Ronaldo and Messi built their legend over more than a decade, with consistency and decisive performances. Lewandowski and Benzema thrived in winning contexts, piling up goals in the advanced stages, while Raúl was the last great ruler of the pre-2000 era.

Haaland, the new contender to the throne

In this panorama of Europe’s great scorers, Haaland’s feat is different: not about the absolute tally, but the astonishing speed with which he is climbing the ranks. Fifty goals in 49 matches is a pace never seen before. If the Norwegian manages to maintain this average, he could in just a few years get close to Messi and Ronaldo, raising the bar for a new generation of strikers.

Today, the Champions League top scorers’ table reads: Cristiano Ronaldo 140,, Lionel Messi 129, Robert Lewandowski 105, Karim Benzema 90, Raúl 71. But the most striking figure is Haaland’s: 50 goals in 49 matches, an unprecedented progression. His race to the throne has only just begun and could rewrite the future of goalscoring.
