Issue number 513 of the CIES Football Observatory’s Weekly Post presents the ranking of the 100 clubs worldwide that have invested the most in transfer fees (including add-ons, regardless of actual payment) to build their current squads.
English dominance: five Premier League teams on top
At the top of the list is Chelsea, with a total investment of €1.314 billion, of which €134 million was spent on their most expensive signing, Moisés Caicedo (10% of the total).
On the podium follow the two Manchester clubs: City (€1.128 billion) and United (€1.071 billion). Just behind are two more English teams, Liverpool (€1.065 billion) and Arsenal (€1.001 billion).
Al-Hilal leads among non-European clubs
No club outside the Premier League has exceeded the billion mark: the highest is the European champions Paris Saint-Germain, with €873 million, in seventh place, just ahead of Real Madrid. Among non-European clubs, Al-Hilal tops the ranking with €451 million (19th place).
Compared to the same period last year, the overall spending of the ten clubs that have invested the most to build their current squads has increased by 15%, rising from €8.44 to €9.67 billion. For the top 100 clubs, the increase was 12%, from €26.23 to €29.42 billion.
