Lucas Carvalho’s Journey

Born in the city of Bauru, São Paulo, on 23 August 2007, Lucas Carvalho Assis, or simply Lukinhas, has been chasing his dream of becoming a footballer from a very young age.

He started his journey at just 11 years old, far from home.

Leaving the interior of São Paulo, he moved to the “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Rio de Janeiro) to begin his youth career at Fluminense.

He spent two years in Rio de Janeiro—one at Fluminense and the next at Canto do Rio, a small youth team in the city.

Then it was time to return closer to home. He joined Ferroviária in Araraquara, still as an under-14 player, where he stayed until part of the under-15s.

Since 2022, he has been part of the Athletico Paranaense squad, showcasing his talent in high-level competitions.

With the “Furacão” (Hurricane), he has been collecting trophies, playing a crucial role in many of them, scoring goals and assisting his teammates in decisive moments.

Trophies:

  • 2 BG Prime
  • 3 Paranaense Championships (under-15 and under-17)
  • 1 Maringá Cup
  • Copa do Brasil 2023 Runner-up
  • 1 Copa Galo
  • 1 Canteras de América

Another trophy could soon be added to the collection, as Athletico Paranaense awaits the winner of the clash between Operário and São José to decide the final of the Campeonato Sul Brasileiro.

In an interview, Lucas Carvalho stated that his main goal is to play at the highest level on the world’s biggest football stages.

He also described himself as a player with good technical ability, mastering the key elements of assisting, heading, and finishing.

This year, he has already scored three goals as a central midfielder.

Characteristics and Playing Style

Playing as a deep-lying midfielder, Lucas Carvalho possesses a wide array of qualities.

In the best tradition of Sergio Busquets, he doesn’t feel the pressure of opponents when playing out from the back. Even when surrounded by opposition players, he remains calm, escapes the press, and distributes the ball superbly.

In this regard, he is not a player who shies away from responsibility. He shows great confidence, always calling for the ball with his signature hand gestures pointing towards his feet.

He is also a key figure in distributing the ball. He has the ability to use both feet to switch play, relieving pressure in areas crowded by the opposition’s defence.

However, don’t mistake him for a playmaker who just slows the game down. While he may not be a speedster, he frequently accelerates the game with ease, often looking for vertical passes to break through the opponent’s defensive lines.

As a good box-to-box midfielder, he also ventures into the final third. There, he is a highly cerebral player, delivering the final or penultimate pass to set up his teammates for goalscoring chances.

He also positions himself inside the box to finish off moves initiated by his teammates from wide areas.

Additionally, Lucas Carvalho has an impressive long-range shot. He has a high success rate, rarely missing the target and frequently forcing the opposing goalkeeper into action, creating numerous opportunities for his team.

Thus, he proves to be a very creative player with refined technique, as well as the ability to break up play, using his intelligence to read the movements of his opponents.

Finally, he has shown significant physical development, becoming an even more complete player.

Future Prospects and Assessment

Lucas Carvalho has a good chance of making it in top-tier international football, especially as he is capable of performing at high intensity throughout the entirety of matches.

He is one of the few players who understands the game at such a young age, occupying spaces intuitively.

With his technical foundations already well established, the other aspects he needs to learn will come with the natural maturation of the player, who has just turned 17.

Thus, with the potential to play at a high level for top European teams, Lucas Carvalho receives a rating of 8.5.
