Serie C, also known as Lega Pro, is undergoing a phase of renewal and consolidation. With a fan base of around 5 million supporters, the league remains a significant part of Italian football, particularly among younger audiences. However, there are ongoing challenges regarding economic sustainability and the selectivity of participating clubs.

An expanding fan base

According to an analysis presented at the “Serie C Business Value” event, Lega Pro boasts approximately 5 million fans. This highlights the growing interest in the league, which stands out for its ability to engage a young and passionate audience. Lega Pro president Matteo Marani emphasized the importance of this following, stressing the need to preserve and nurture it through the integration of young talent and improved facilities.

A League of two faces

This season has been described as “two-faced” by President Marani. On the one hand, it delivered tight and thrilling competition; on the other, some clubs faced significant management issues. The exclusions of Taranto and Turris—not due to bankruptcy, but for missing federation deadlines—highlight the economic and organizational difficulties encountered by certain clubs. Marani pointed out that nearly 200 clubs have gone bankrupt in the past 25 years, stressing the importance of careful and responsible management.

Toward greater selectivity

Looking ahead to the next season, Lega Pro plans to adopt stricter criteria for league registration. Marani urged clubs not to register unless they can guarantee participation until the end of the tournament, for the good of the competition and the clubs themselves. This early “screening” aims to prevent scenarios where teams cannot complete the season, thereby compromising the league’s integrity.

Economic sustainability: A top priority

In addition to selectivity, economic sustainability is a key challenge for Lega Pro. Clubs must manage finances with transparency and responsibility, avoiding excessive debt and ensuring long-term planning. Lega Pro is working on implementing measures to promote sound and sustainable management, ensuring the league’s continuity and growth over time. For this reason, a Salary Cap will be introduced next season, and the Zola Reform has been approved.
Serie C continues to be a vital and growing championship, with a solid fan base and a central role in developing young talent. However, to consolidate this status and face future challenges, it is crucial to adopt policies of selectivity and economic sustainability. Only through responsible and forward-thinking management can Lega Pro remain a pillar of Italian football, contributing to its growth and recognition.
