Kompany as a Professional Manager

Vincent Kompany’s prowess as a centre-back needs no introduction.

He began and ended his playing career at RSC Anderlecht, where he also experienced the unique role of player-manager.

However, it was at Manchester City that he truly made his mark, winning numerous titles and defining an era.

Kompany’s managerial career also started at Anderlecht, where he delivered commendable performances, especially considering it was his debut season as a full-time manager.

Although he didn’t win any trophies, he managed 90 matches over two seasons (2020/21 and 2021/22), with a record of 41 wins, 30 draws, and 19 losses.

His impressive performance caught the attention of Burnley, who offered him the managerial position.

The Belgian’s mission was to secure promotion for the team, which was playing in the Championship during the 2022/23 season.

He accomplished this goal with distinction. Burnley amassed 101 points in the English Second Division, clinching the title and securing promotion.

However, in the 2023/24 season, things did not go as smoothly. The Clarets had a dismal performance in the Premier League, managing only 5 wins throughout the competition, finishing with 24 points in 19th place.

Burnley only managed to stay ahead of Sheffield United, which had one of the worst campaigns in recent Premier League history.

The team’s poor performance cannot be blamed on a lack of investment. The club spent €111 million to strengthen the squad, and none of the key players were sold.

These expenditures highlight two crucial points. Firstly, the exorbitant prices in the Premier League often do not reflect the quality of the players signed. Secondly, were these signings requested by the manager?

Clearly, the level of competition between the first and second divisions is vastly different. But a team that scored over a hundred points in the lower division should perform better than accumulating only 24 points, especially with an additional €110 million spent.

This has been Vincent Kompany’s managerial journey so far.

Bayern Munich’s Announcement

Today, on May 29, 2024, Bayern Munich announced Vincent Kompany as their new manager, following the earlier announced departure of Thomas Tuchel.

In a series of questions posted on the Bavarians’ official Instagram account, the new manager expressed his honour at representing such a prestigious club.

Furthermore, he stated that the style of football to be played should be passionate, combined with courage and aggression, reflecting Kompany’s own characteristics.

Future Projections

As previously mentioned, Kompany is not a manager with extensive experience or a record of significant title wins.

There is a question mark over whether he is indeed the best choice for Bayern Munich at this moment.

The team, which has won the Bundesliga for 11 consecutive seasons, faces its first year without lifting a trophy, despite heavy investment in Harry Kane.

The atmosphere at a club traditionally seen as extremely stable does not seem as calm.

This appears to be a desperate attempt at innovation, inspired by the success of a manager with a similar background to Kompany.

Seeing the overwhelming success of Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, the Bavarians seem keen to follow a similar path.

However, there is a fundamental difference between the two. Bayern Munich is by far the biggest club in Germany and one of the largest in the world.

Leverkusen is an institution striving for growth, but which had not won a Bundesliga title until this season.

The level of scrutiny, especially from outside, will be enormous. Fans accustomed to victories will not tolerate another year without silverware.

The media will also place intense pressure on Kompany in the event of any failure.

When Bayern Munich brought in Julian Nagelsmann, many were sceptical. However, the Bavarians were coming off a Champions League victory accompanied by the DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga.

Nagelsmann did a good job, winning two German Super Cups and a Bundesliga title. Even so, he was not universally accepted.

Of course, the newly announced manager has a very talented squad at his disposal. He will also have the opportunity to request targeted reinforcements.

There are good prospects for him to implement his aggressive, ball-playing style, especially against less formidable Bundesliga teams.

However, this may not have been the right moment, given the pressure currently surrounding the club.
