The 2024/25 Serie A is gearing up for a thrilling finale, with the title to be decided on the final matchday. In the running are Inter and Napoli, separated by just one point, ready to write a new chapter in Italian football history. Such an exciting finish brings to mind some of the most incredible conclusions in the league, where the championship was decided only at the final whistle, often with dramatic turnarounds and unpredictable matches.
Inter vs Napoli: everything in 90 minutes
With Napoli on 79 points and Inter on 78, the fate of the scudetto is in the hands of the Azzurri, who will face Cagliari at the Maradona. The Nerazzurri, meanwhile, will visit Como. Both teams will play on Friday, May 23, at 8:45 PM. In case of a tie on points, a playoff match will be held to decide the title.
But this isn’t the first time Serie A has reached such a heated conclusion. In fact, history is full of memorable examples where fate turned everything around at the last moment.
The most incredible scudetti decided on the final matchday:
Inter 2001/02: the collapse at the Olimpico
On the final matchday, Inter led by one point over Juventus and Roma. In Rome, against Lazio, Cúper’s team took the lead twice but lost 4-2 amid tears from Ronaldo and Zanetti. Juventus won 2-0 in Udine and overtook everyone. Roma finished second, Inter third. A bitter ending for the Nerazzurri.
Lazio 1999/2000: the rain in Perugia and Juventus’s downfall
Perhaps the most famous of all. Juventus arrived at the final matchday ahead of Lazio. In Perugia, however, an epic storm delayed the start of the match, and the Bianconeri lost 1-0. Meanwhile, Lazio beat Reggina 3-0 and secured a scudetto that seemed lost. One of the most unexpected comebacks in Serie A history.
Milan 1972/73: the “Fatal Verona”
Milan practically had the scudetto in hand. They needed a win against Verona, already safe. However, the Rossoneri collapsed 5-3 in one of the most absurd matches ever. Juventus, in second, beat Roma 2-1 and won the title. A true sporting drama for Milan fans.
Serie A 2024/25: a finale worthy of history books
This year’s championship has offered a high level of balance, with Napoli and Inter engaging in a head-to-head duel that will last until the final minute. Antonio Conte’s Napoli has found solidity and grit, while Simone Inzaghi’s Inter has confirmed one of the strongest squads in Europe but lost precious points in recent rounds.
Just like in 2000 or 2002, this time the title could also slip away at the last moment. And if Napoli draws and Inter wins? It would be another historic turnaround. If both finish with the same points, a playoff match on neutral ground will be held to determine the Italian champion. A possibility that hasn’t occurred in decades and would add another epic chapter to this season.
The beauty of football is also this: the scudetto can be lost or won on the final matchday, and every mistake can be decisive. Napoli and Inter are about to enter football history, and as happened in 2002, 2000, or 1973, a single goal, a deflection, or an error can change everything.
