- Vasco vs. Athletico-PR
- São Paulo vs. Atlético-MG
- Bahia vs. Flamengo
- Juventude vs. Corinthians
The first-leg matches of the quarterfinals will take place next week, with a base date of Wednesday, August 28th. The second legs will be held during the week of September 12th, on a Thursday, following the FIFA international break when clubs release players for national team duty.
Vasco vs. Athletico-PR
The match between Vasco and Athletico-PR promises to be a balanced affair, as both teams are currently in 9th and 10th place in the Brasileirão, respectively, with a weak recent track record. In the last five rounds of the Brasileirão, Vasco has only secured one win, with two draws and two losses, while Athletico-PR has suffered three losses and one draw.
Vasco defeated Atlético-GO in the Round of 16, drawing the first leg at Antônio Accioly with a goal by Vegetti in the 43rd minute and winning the second leg 1-0 at São Januário.
Despite Athletico-PR’s struggles in the Brazilian Championship, they comfortably defeated Bragantino in the Round of 16. In the first leg at Ligga Arena, they won 2-0, and in the return match, they led 3-0 before conceding two late goals from Thiago Borbas, resulting in a 5-2 aggregate score.
São Paulo vs. Atlético-MG
São Paulo vs. Atlético-MG features two of the top five squads in Brazil and promises to be a thrilling matchup.
Both teams drew away from home in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores Round of 16 matches.
Despite losing the Choque-Rei derby, São Paulo has had a better recent run of form than Atlético-MG.
In the Round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, Atlético-MG had a scare in the first leg, going down 2-0 to CRB within the first seven minutes but managed to recover, ending the match 2-2. In the return leg, at home, Atlético-MG won 3-0 to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.
São Paulo advanced past Goiás in the previous round. In the first leg at Morumbi, the Tricolor capitalized on Marcão’s red card to win 2-0. In the return leg, they played a conservative match, drawing 0-0 to ensure their qualification.
Bahia vs. Flamengo
Despite Flamengo’s tough spell this season, they are the favorites against Bahia due to having the strongest squad in the Americas.
Flamengo comes off a heavy 4-1 defeat to Botafogo, which has widened the gap with the Brasileirão leaders. The Rubro-Negro has not won in three Brazilian Championship matches.
Bahia, on the other hand, has secured two consecutive victories in the Brasileirão, defeating Grêmio and Vitória.
In the Round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, Flamengo and Bahia faced the toughest teams currently. Flamengo eliminated Palmeiras, while Bahia knocked out Botafogo.
Flamengo put in a dominant performance in the first leg against Palmeiras at the Maracanã, winning 2-0. In the return leg, they withstood heavy pressure, lost 1-0, but still advanced.
Against Botafogo, Bahia drew the first leg 1-1 at Nilton Santos and won 1-0 at Arena Fonte Nova, with Luciano Rodríguez scoring in the final minutes.
Juventude vs. Corinthians
Juventude vs. Corinthians is another evenly matched contest. Although Juventude is in better form, Corinthians plays the second leg at home, where they are very strong. Last season, Corinthians overturned adverse scores at home against Remo, Atlético-MG, and América-MG, securing qualification in all these encounters via penalty shootouts.
Juventude is exceeding expectations in the Brasileirão, staying relatively far from the relegation zone. In the last round, they defeated Athletico-PR away, a team difficult to beat at home.
Corinthians, meanwhile, drew with Fluminense away, marking their third consecutive draw in the Brasileirão.
Juventude eliminated Fluminense in the Round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. They played an excellent first leg at Alfredo Jaconi, winning 3-2, though they conceded a goal to Thiago Santos in the 49th minute of the second half. The second leg was closely contested, but Juventude played well, going up 2-0 before conceding a late equalizer to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.
Corinthians faced Grêmio in the previous round. In the first leg at Neo Química Arena, Raniele’s red card early in the second half influenced the match, but Grêmio did not perform well. Corinthians had a goal disallowed in the final minutes due to Giovane being offside. In the return leg, another 0-0 draw led to a penalty shootout, where Corinthians converted three penalties, while Grêmio scored one and missed three, allowing Corinthians to advance.
Path to the Final
The bracket to the final is set. The winner of Vasco vs. Athletico-PR will face the winner of Atlético-MG vs. São Paulo in the semifinal, while the winner of Flamengo vs. Bahia will meet the winner of Corinthians vs. Juventude.
