Tributes to Pelé

Before the opening whistle, Pelé was honored. First, a large banner was raised in the stands, which showed the legend as a young man, with the word “King” on one side and the infinity symbol on the other, an allusion to the King being eternal.

The two daughters of Pelé and the president of the CBF Ednaldo Rodrigues entered with the cups of the three World Cups won by the King, the only player to achieve this feat.

Finally, during the minute of silence, the screen showed a video with remarkable images of the King’s career.

First-half

After the first 15 minutes of greater study between the teams, Palmeiras had their first big chance, after goalkeeper Santos got into trouble with the ball in his foot. The pressure exerted by Endrick had an effect, so the ball went up, but Rony had no power in his header.

A few minutes later, at 22 of the game, Arrascaeta stole the ball from Zé Rafael, invaded the area and conceded the penalty from the Palmeiras midfielder. Gabigol went to charge and converted with mastery as usual, displacing Weverton. At the celebration, just after 25 minutes, he took off his shirt and received a yellow card.

At 37 minutes, Palmeiras tied the match. Dudu tried to shoot from outside the area, the ball deflected into David Luiz and offered itself to Raphael Veiga, who did not miss, hitting Santos’ side.

Palmeiras’ turn around came in the first stage, at 49 minutes, Gabriel Menino hit a masterful left-foot shot at the top bin.

In the next minute, Éverton Ribeiro made a great move and found Gabigol to finish with a chip covering the goalkeeper, scoring his second goal of the match.

In the 10th minute, Flamengo’s captain (Éverton Ribeiro) committed a silly penalty. Endrick tried the “hat” in the area and the midfielder, with his arm outstretched, in an unnatural movement, hit the ball. The turning point came at the feet of Raphael Veiga, hitting the left corner of the opposing goalkeeper, scoring his second goal of the match.

Flamengo didn’t give up and in a very well crafted move, passing through several players, it reached the tie again in the 15th minute. After Ayrton Lucas’s pass going to the bottom line, striker Pedro finished with the heel kick, scoring an exquisite goal, with no chance for Weverton.

Alviverde’s winning goal came at the feet of the surprising star of the game. Gabriel Menino completed Raphael Veiga’s cross, hit soft shot, but managed to beat goalkeeper Santos. The goal caused controversy, as the Flamenguistas demanded that Mayke was offside, claiming that the player interfered in the play, however the arbitration did not see such interference and validated the goal.

After 10 minutes of stoppage time, Wilton Pereira Sampaio gave the final whistle, making Palmeiras champion for the first time in the Super Cup, as they had lost to Flamengo in 2021. Palmeiras reached its seventh title in the Abel Ferreira period.
