Final Matchday of the Brasileirão
Heading into the last round, Palmeiras and Botafogo were neck and neck in the title race. The Rio side had 76 points, while the São Paulo team had 73.
For Palmeiras to secure their third consecutive Brasileirão title, they needed a win against Fluminense at home while hoping Botafogo lost to São Paulo in Rio.
Botafogo 2-1 São Paulo
15’: Luiz Henrique made a run down the right, and the ball fell to Marçal at the edge of the box. His shot just missed the post.
37’: São Paulo faltered in their build-up play. Marlon Freitas fed Igor Jesus, who one-touched the ball to Savarino. The Venezuelan went one-on-one with keeper Jandrei and coolly chipped it in, putting Botafogo ahead.
41’: Alex Telles received a long pass, broke into the box, and forced Jandrei into a foot save. Igor Jesus struck the rebound, but Jandrei made another brilliant save before Ruan cleared it off the line.
58’: Almada passed to Igor Jesus, who let the ball run to Luiz Henrique. The forward advanced and unleashed a curling shot, only for Jandrei to pull off another great save.
63’: Willian Gomes dispossessed Marlon Freitas in Botafogo’s defensive third and slotted it past John, leveling the game at 1-1. Botafogo players appealed for a foul, but the referee upheld the goal.
87’: Luiz Henrique fired from long range, sending the ball over the bar.
90+7’: In the dying moments, São Paulo’s Jandrei misplaced a pass. Gregore intercepted, surged forward, and scored the winner for Botafogo, sealing the title.
Botafogo not only claimed the Brasileirão but also won the Libertadores in the same year, becoming just the third team to achieve this feat, after Pelé’s Santos in 1962 and 1963 and Flamengo in 2019.

Palmeiras 0-1 Fluminense
Palmeiras’ title hopes hinged on more than their own result. They needed a win against Fluminense and a Botafogo loss.
None of it happened, as Palmeiras fell to Fluminense at Allianz Parque while Botafogo triumphed in Rio.
Despite flirting with relegation, Fluminense delivered a stellar performance, securing a crucial victory to finish 13th in the league.
2’: Arias whipped in a corner, and Thiago Silva’s header rattled the crossbar.
Palmeiras dominated possession but lacked incisiveness in the final third.
37’: Nonato launched a long ball to Serna, who muscled past Vanderlan, dribbled Murilo in the box, and finished low into the corner past Weverton.

48’: Estêvão broke through on the wing and crossed to Flaco López, whose header was saved by Fábio.
51’: Vanderlan scored a stunning goal, but VAR disallowed it due to Dudu’s interference in an offside position.
90+1’: Keno broke free on a counter, dribbled past Murilo, and went one-on-one with Weverton. However, the keeper denied him with a superb save.
Fluminense’s vital victory ensured their survival in the top flight, while Palmeiras endured a disappointing end to the year, winning only the Campeonato Paulista after four consecutive seasons with major trophies.
After 9 seasons, idol Dudu is set to leave the club next year. Part of the Palmeiras fans ended the year complaining about the choices made by coach Abel Ferreira, such as Dudu not being present in some games and the choice of some players over others.
