São Paulo 0x2 Palmeiras
The Choque-Rei boiled over on Sunday in the 10th round of the Brasileirão 2023. The packed Morumbi Stadium, filled with São Paulo fans, witnessed the team perform well and match Palmeiras’ actions in the game. However, they couldn’t contain the spirited team led by the controversial and masterful Abel Ferreira.
São Paulo took to the field with: Rafael, Rafinha (Marcos Paulo), Arboleda Beraldo, and Caio Paulista, Pablo Maia, Gabi (Rodrigo Nestor), and Alisson (Juan), Michel Araújo (Rodriguinho), Luciano (David), and Calleri.
Palmeiras, on the other hand, fielded: Weverton, Mayke, Luan, Naves (Jailson), and Piquerez, Zé Rafael, Gabriel Menino (Richard Ríos), and Rafael Veiga (Fabinho), Artur, Rony (Endrick), and Dudu (Breno Lopes).
The game started heatedly, with São Paulo trying to maintain possession while Palmeiras pushed their lines a bit higher to regain the ball quickly. In the first minute of the game, after a ball was crossed into the box, there was a series of deflections, and it fell to Luciano, who unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that hit Mayke’s hand. The referee initially awarded a penalty, but the VAR called for a review and noticed that the ball had hit Mayke’s head before touching his hand, which was not open. As a result, the penalty was overturned.
Palmeiras seized the opportunity and began attacking São Paulo more. Up until then, São Paulo had been having a solid match. However, in the 9th minute, after a back pass to Arboleda, the Ecuadorian made a mistake and gave the ball away to Gabriel Menino. He dribbled past Gabi and unleashed a magnificent shot into the top corner, making it 1-0 for Verdão, much to the disappointment of the nearly 55,000 Tricolor fans in attendance.
From that point on, the game opened up a bit, and both teams sought the goal. Palmeiras naturally dropped back their lines a bit and tried to surprise São Paulo with quick transitions, while São Paulo relied heavily on the speed of Marcos Paulo to break through the Alviverde defense.
Both teams had at least one clear chance to score in the first half. Palmeiras had a chance with Artur, who cut inside from the right but shot weakly, and São Paulo had a powerful long-range shot from Luciano that was saved by Weverton.
It was in the second half that the game heated up even more. Just 2 minutes in, Veiga found Artur making a run into the box from the right. The skillful winger feigned a dribble, crossed the ball, and although Juan headed it away, it fell to Zé Rafael. The number 8 unleashed a powerful shot into the bottom corner, but Rafael made a great save.
São Paulo almost immediately responded in style. After a beautiful passing sequence on the right side of the box, Nestor played a precise pass to Luciano, who controlled the ball and unleashed a good low shot that forced Weverton into another excellent save. The game continued in an open manner, and Tricolor was getting closer to equalizing, especially with the change in dynamics after Nestor came on.
At the 13th minute, the young player delivered another beautiful pass, this time finding Calleri infiltrating the Alviverde’s area. The Argentine striker found himself face-to-face with Weverton, but the Palmeiras wall grew and made another great save. In the subsequent play, after a corner kick, Arboleda rose and hit the crossbar.
Palmeiras, on the other hand, defended well and found good transitions, but often faltered in the final touch. However, at the 32nd minute of the second half, Luan made an unsuspecting clearance, which fell to Arboleda’s feet. The Ecuadorian controlled the ball poorly and, in an attempt to recover, attempted to chip it over Breno Lopes. However, Lopes reacted quickly, intercepting the ball and connecting with a great header pass to Endrick.
The talented youngster controlled the ball, attacked the area, and struck firmly into the back of the net, making it 2-0 for Verdão. Despite the challenging result, São Paulo continued to seek a goal in the final minutes, but all their chances were stopped by the giant hands of Weverton.
The excellent classic ended with a 2-0 victory for Palestra Itália, showcasing the technical ability and resilience of the Alviverde. It also highlighted the good work that Dorival Júnior has been doing at Tricolor Paulista, especially in terms of consistency, creating plays, and occupying spaces.
With this victory, Palmeiras remains in 2nd place, while São Paulo stays in 8th position in the impressive Brasileirão 2023.

Grêmio started the game applying pressure, and just 3 minutes in, Cuiabano crossed the ball, and Villasanti hit the net from the outside. At the 15th minute, Suárez received the ball in the box and passed it to Bitello, but the midfielder stumbled and only managed to touch it to Cristaldo, who shot straight at Matheus Cunha for an easy save.
Flamengo opened the scoring at the 23rd minute. Wesley made a beautiful play on the left side, passed it to Cebolinha, who evaded Kannemann and struck a powerful shot across the goal.

At the 44th minute, Suárez hit a well-placed shot that hit both posts but didn’t go in. A few minutes later, it was Villasanti who hit the post.
