Palmeiras one draw away from the Brasileirão 2023 title

Palmeiras

Palmeiras defeated Fluminense’s reserve team, putting their hands on the trophy. With a simple draw against Cruzeiro in the last round, Verdão becomes the Brazilian champion.

To snatch the title from Palmeiras, Galo has to win and overcome an 8-goal difference in goal margin, in case the leader is defeated.

Palmeiras 1×0 Fluminense

Due to the Club World Cup, Fluminense faced Palmeiras at Allianz Parque with a reserve team, featuring only goalkeeper Fábio as a starter.

Palmeiras dominated, created several opportunities, and had goals disallowed in the first half. Breno Lopes was the team’s main highlight, scoring 3 times in the first half, but only 1 counted.

In the first minute, Piquerez crossed from the left, and Breno Lopes appeared in the small area but sent it over the goal.

At 2 minutes, Fluminense responded with John Kennedy. The striker combined with Léo Fernández and shot from outside the area, saved by Weverton.

John Kennedy had another opportunity at 6 minutes. Thiago Santos launched Kennedy in speed, who outpaced Marcos Rocha and shot above the crossbar.

Palmeiras had their first goal disallowed at 16 minutes. Endrick won the duel with David Braz, entered the area, and crossed for Breno Lopes to score. The VAR spotted a handball by Endrick at the start of the play, and the goal was annulled.

At 40 minutes, Mayke waited for Marcos Rocha on the right wing and passed. The full-back/center-back crossed, and Breno Lopes scored. The goal was again disallowed, this time the ball had gone out of bounds.

For the second half, Diniz brought in André and Keno in search of a comeback.

At 2 minutes, Murilo advanced through the middle and gave a beautiful three-finger pass to Endrick. The youngster attempted a chip shot but missed.

Fernando Diniz’s plans were frustrated at 7 minutes. Justen, making his professional debut, made a harsh tackle on Piquerez and was sent off after VAR consultation.

With one player down, the match cooled down; Fluminense closed ranks, stopped creating dangerous opportunities, while Palmeiras managed the result well, practically securing them as the 2023 Brasileirão champions.

Palmeiras posed the greater threat, had two chances with Jhon Jhon. In the first, he crossed, and Flaco López missed, and in the second, the midfielder attempted a shot but was stopped by Fábio.

With the victory, only a miracle can give the title to Galo and Flamengo. Thus, Palmeiras knows it’s just a matter of time to secure their second Brasileirão championship.
