The 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro kicked off on July 2 in Switzerland and, after just a few days, has already delivered some early signs about the top contenders, potential surprises, and overall balance of the tournament. The group stage runs for long days, but the opening round of matches has already revealed which teams are better positioned to fight for the quarter-finals.

With big wins, narrow margins, and a few comebacks, the first matches highlighted both the strength of the favourites and the tight competition in some groups.

All results so far

Finland 1-0 Iceland (Group A)

A surprise win for Finland, who scored from a second-half free kick. Iceland finished the match with ten players, limiting their chances of equalising.

Norway 2-1 Switzerland (Group A)

Switzerland took the lead, but Norway responded with a strong second-half performance. A goal by Hegerberg and a late own goal secured the comeback win.

Italy 1-0 Belgium (Group B)

A solid debut from the Azzurre, who secured three important points thanks to a first-half goal by Arianna Caruso. A composed and disciplined performance that boosts morale.

Spain 5-0 Portugal (Group B)

Total domination from Spain, who played their usual flowing football and found the net five times with four different scorers. The reigning world champions have made it clear they’re aiming for European glory too.

Italy’s tournament so far

Italy’s opening win over Belgium was a strong start. The team showed cohesion, controlled possession, and knew how to handle pressure. Caruso’s goal was the reward for a well-played first half, while the second half was all about managing the lead. The group remains challenging, especially with Spain in great form, but Italy’s path to the quarter-finals is very much in their hands. The next match is on Monday, July 7 against Portugal, followed by the clash with Spain on July 11.

Weekend fixtures

The second round of the group stage continues this weekend, with key matches that could shape the qualification picture:

Friday, July 4

  • Denmark vs Sweden, 18:00
  • Germany vs Poland, 21:00

Saturday, July 5

  • Wales vs Netherlands, 18:00
  • France vs England, 21:00

France vs England is the big game of the round, but all eyes will also be on Germany and the Netherlands as they kick off their campaigns. Italy, meanwhile, prepares for their second match, with a spot in the quarter-finals already within reach.
