The latest matches of the Italian Women’s National Team, the path toward Euro 2025 and the 2027 World Cup, and major news about UEFA prize money: here’s everything you need to know about the future of the Azzurre.

Nations League: A New Italy Takes Shape

The Italian Women’s National Team sent out encouraging signals in the UEFA Nations League. After an up-and-down journey, the Azzurre found new cohesion under head coach Andrea Soncin. Among the most notable results were a 1-1 draw with newly crowned world champions Spain and a convincing 3-0 win over Denmark. These two performances restored confidence and suggest the team is headed in the right direction.

Although these matches were not decisive for qualification, they served as a crucial testing ground for tactics, formations, and new players. Soncin relied on a mix of promising young talents and reliable veterans, laying the groundwork for an ambitious team.

Euro 2025 Goal

The next big goal is Euro 2025, set to take place in Switzerland. Italy has been drawn into a group with Spain, Belgium, and Portugal. It’s not an easy task, but it’s far from impossible: the team’s new spirit and the confidence built during the Nations League raise hopes.

Coach Soncin has a clear vision: to build a solid, organized team capable of taking on any opponent. Juventus defender Lisa Boattin will be a key pillar in the defense, but the attack must also find more consistency. Squad selections for the final phase will be crucial, but the minimum objective is to get past the group stage and reach the round of 16.

World Cup 2027 Objective

While the Euro is just around the corner, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is already looking ahead to the 2027 World Cup. After a disappointing early exit in 2023, the team wants to return to the global stage as a contender. Qualifying will begin in 2026, but the upcoming months are vital for building a competitive squad.

The growth of the women’s game, increased media attention, and institutional support are creating the ideal conditions for a relaunch. The hope is that the 2027 World Cup will mark a definitive turning point.

UEFA: Doubled Prize Pool for Euro 2025

Off the pitch, UEFA has also sent a strong message about equity and the value of women’s football. For Euro 2025, the total prize fund has been increased to €41 million — up 156% from the 2022 edition.

The 16 qualified teams will each receive €1.8 million, with additional bonuses for group-stage wins (€100,000) and draws (€50,000). The tournament winner could take home up to €5.1 million.

But the real news is this: for the first time, 30% to 40% of the total fund will go directly to the players. A historic shift, recognizing the value of those on the pitch.

Compensation for Clubs Too: A Growing System

UEFA also announced €6 million in payments for clubs that release players to their national teams — a way to recognize the work of the clubs and encourage further investment in women’s football.

Moreover, a €1 billion investment plan has been confirmed for the women’s game in Europe between 2024 and 2030. This is a concrete commitment to closing the gender gap and building a more sustainable and equitable future.

The year 2025 is shaping up to be a decisive one for Italian women’s football. The Azzurre have the chance to shine again, while UEFA is finally backing the game with meaningful support.

Italy is ready for the challenge — and this time, it has the tools to go all the way.
